DAP Research: Mobile apps at the top 50 busiest airports

At DAP we continuously conduct research into relevant topics within the aviation industry. This time we have taken a closer look at the mobile apps of the top 50 busiest airports in the world. How many airports offer a native Android and iOS app? And which functionalities do they contain?

Top 50 busiest airports

To get a clear view of the adoption of mobile apps within the airport industry, this study covers the 50 busiest airports in the world. At the very top of the list we find Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with over 100 million passengers in 2017. The list is closed by Sheremetyevo Airport, with 40 million visitors in that same year.

In that same list we also find a number of three airports that have an app developed by M2mobi: Dubai International Airports, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Orlando International Airport.

A digital landscape

Within most of the sectors companies seem to develop and optimise their mobile landscape. The digital presence - across all channels - is no longer one of the peripheral factors, but can form a true basis. An important part of this digital landscape is the provision of an iOS and Android app.

Apps can be of great added value for both the passengers and the airports. Passengers can be provided with a seamless and relaxed journey through a personal approach. In addition, the airports can use their app to stimulate passengers to make use of all the facilities the airport has to offer, such as the many shops and restaurants. Applications can also play an important role in communicating with passengers, as became clear during an all-devastating hurricane at Orlando International Airport.

It is remarkable that only 50% of the surveyed airports invest in the opportunities mentioned above. In addition, the fact that these airports have a mobile app does not mean that they actually make use of all the possibilities it has to offer. For example, less than 20% of the airports offer functionalities such as E-parking, Mobile Food Ordering or Live updates of the current waiting times.

It is also noticeable that only 4% of the airports has implemented a chatbot in its app. Using chatbots is an optimal and very personal way for airports to communicate with their passengers.

Conclusion

There is still a lot to be gained for the airport industry. A majority of the airports doesn’t seem to see the importance of an optimized digital or mobile landscape. And that while there are so many opportunities to be achieved.

We will conduct this survey regularly, in order to continue to provide an up-to-date view on the adoption of mobile apps within the top 50 busiest airports.
